The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Story

Lords of the Elves, Dwarves, and Men are each handed a Ring of Power at the beginning of the Second Age of Middle-earth. The Dark Lord Sauron creates the One Ring in Mount Doom, imbuing it with the vast majority of his power in an effort to use it to control the other Rings and ultimately take over all of Middle-earth. In Mordor, a last band of Men and Elves fight against Sauron’s army.

Isildur of Gondor removes the Ring from Sauron’s finger, destroying him and sending him back to the spirit world. The First Battle Against Sauron marks the beginning of the Third Age of Middle-earth. Isildur is tainted by the Ring’s power, so he steals it and is eventually slain by Orcs. Once the Ring is lost in a river for two millennia, Gollum discovers it and keeps it for the next 450 years. Gollum gives up the ring, and a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who has no idea where the ring came from, finds it.

Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday in the Shire with his old buddy, the wizard Gandalf the Grey, whom he hasn’t seen in 60 years. After leaving the Shire for the last time, Bilbo gives his nephew Frodo his inheritance, which includes the Ring. Gollum was caught by Sauron’s Orcs and severely tortured until he revealed two words: “Shire” and “Baggins,” which Gandalf later discovered during his investigation of the Ring and its true nature. Frodo is warned by Gandalf upon his return to leave the Shire. Gandalf rides to Isengard to meet with the chief of the wizards, Saruman, but learns of Saruman’s betrayal and allegiance to Sauron, who has sent nine Nazgûl wraith slaves to find Frodo as he departs with his companion, gardener Samwise Gamgee.

Frodo and Sam are joined by Merry and Pippin, two more hobbits on their quest to reach Bree and meet Gandalf at the Prancing Pony Inn. Gandalf, however, is captured by Saruman and doesn’t make it. After that, a Ranger named Strider helps the hobbits and says he’ll take them to Rivendell, but the Nazgûl ambush them on Weathertop, and the Witch-King stabs Frodo with a Morgul blade. Arwen, a beautiful Elf and Strider’s sweetheart, tracks him down and helps save Frodo while also calling down a flood that washes out the Nazgûl. She brings him to Rivendell, where the Elves can treat him. After Gandalf’s Great Eagle rescue from Isengard, the two finally meet. Affirming their love for one another, Strider and Arwen are reunited that night.

Lord Elrond, Arwen’s father, decides not to retain the Ring at Rivendell after hearing of Saruman’s treason from Gandalf and recognizing they face threats from both Sauron and his minion, Saruman. With Frodo and Gandalf in attendance, he calls a meeting of Elves, Men, and Dwarves, where it is decided that the Ring must be burned in the fires of Mount Doom. Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir of Gondor, and Strider—revealed to be Aragorn, Isildur’s heir and the true King of Gondor—decide to take the Ring upon themselves. Bilbo, who has relocated to Rivendell, presents Frodo with his sword Sting and a mithril chainmail shirt.

As they approach the Gap of Rohan, the Fellowship of the Ring learns that they are being followed by Saruman’s spies. Instead, the Fellowship sets off through Caradhras, but Saruman calls down a storm, forcing them to go through the Mines of Moria. Once inside, a tentacled water beast seals off the entrance, trapping the Fellowship inside until they can find a way out. The Fellowship is ambushed by Orcs and a cave troll after discovering the dead bodies of the Dwarves of Moria. They manage to hold their ground, but then they encounter Durin’s Bane, a Balrog that has made its home in the mines. Gandalf fights off the Balrog and casts it into a great chasm while the others get away, but the Balrog follows him down into the depths of the pit and drags him into the darkness. Galadriel, the Elf queen who rules over the peaceful kingdom of Lothlórien, tells Frodo in private that only he can finish the journey and that one of the Fellowship will try to take the Ring once they arrive. She also gives him a glimpse of the future in which the Shire is enslaved by Sauron. Although Sauron is preoccupied with the Fellowship, Saruman has assembled an army of faithful Uruk-hai in Isengard to eliminate them and grab the One Ring.

The group takes a riverboat to get to Parth Galen. After Lady Galadriel’s warning, Boromir tries to steal the Ring from Frodo when he wanders off. Next, the Uruk-hai scouts sent by Saruman ambush the Fellowship, with Lurtz, their leader, fatally wounding Boromir as he tries in vain to save Merry and Pippin from being captured. Aragorn comes to the rescue of Gondor, killing Lurtz and comforting Boromir in his final moments before he passes. Frodo decides to go to Mordor without his friends, because he is afraid the Ring may corrupt them, but he takes Sam with him because he promised Gandalf he would protect Sam. Frodo and Sam continue their trek to Mordor as Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli set out to rescue Merry and Pippin.
