The Little Mermaid Movie Story

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name, “The Little Mermaid” (1989) is a beloved Disney classic. The film is now considered a classic in the Disney animated film canon and has spawned numerous spinoffs and adaptations. Here’s what happened in the first cartoon version:

Plot Summary:

Princess Ariel, the young and inquisitive mermaid, lives with her father, King Triton, and her six older sisters in the deep water. She is attracted by the ships and human relics she finds on the ocean below, and it inspires her to fantasize about visiting the human world.

While attending a party on a ship, Ariel helps save Prince Eric’s life when a storm hits. She realizes she loves him from afar, but she can’t tell him because mermaids aren’t supposed to talk to humans.

Ariel is unfazed and goes to the sea witch Ursula for help, who offers her legs in return for her voice. If Ariel fails to win Prince Eric’s affection in three days after becoming human, she will be Ursula’s forever.

The bird Scuttle and the fish Flounder help Ariel acclimate to life on land when she and Eric have trouble communicating with one another. Ursula, posing as a human named Vanessa, uses Ariel’s voice, however, to distract Eric from his feelings for her.

Ursula’s intentions are thwarted at the last minute thanks to Ariel’s friends, and the princess finds her voice again. She faces Ursula, who becomes a massive sea monster, with the help of her friends and her father. Following a tense conflict, Eric breaks Ursula’s enchantment by destroying her with the wreckage of a ship that has sunk.

King Triton ultimately decides that Ariel will be happier as a human and makes the change permanent. When Ariel and Eric get married, they bring together the human and aquatic worlds and live happily ever after.

Themes:

Throughout “The Little Mermaid,” questions of wonder, selflessness, and self-discovery emerge as central themes. It’s a great lesson in what may happen when you make a transaction without thinking it through first. The film’s fundamental message is that sincere love and honest communication are more important than outward appearances and conformity.

Musical Numbers:

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, when “The Little Mermaid” was released, Disney’s animation division was revitalized, ushering in a period known as the Disney Renaissance, during which the studio released a number of successful animated classics. People of all ages continue to enjoy the film.
