Insidious: The Red Door Movie Story

Josh Lambert has no recollection of his time in The Further nine years after his possession, in the year 2019. Both his mother Lorraine and wife Renai have passed away, and he is now divorced. The drop-off at college was supposed to be a time of reconciliation for him and his son Dalton, but the two got into an altercation instead.

Dalton draws a picture of the crimson door into The Beyond for his first art class assignment. Meanwhile, Josh begins to experience hauntings from a man he believes is his father, Ben Burton, who he had previously assumed had abandoned the family when Josh was a child. At a frat party hosted by Chris, Dalton’s roommate, the spirit of a student who died of chronic vomiting is seen. Chris shows Dalton a YouTube video by Specs and Tucker, detailing how astral projection works, and the latter leads to a footage of Elise Rainier discussing The Beyond after Chris had unintentionally entered it again.

Chris is watching over Dalton as he tries to astral project again; as she is attacked by something invisible, her screams bring Dalton back to his body, where he recognizes the red-faced demon from his childhood. Chris warns Dalton to quit utilizing his skills, and then his brother Foster calls to tells him about a reoccurring dream he used to have in which Josh was trying to murder them. Dalton’s painting of a possessed Josh standing in front of the red door is finally completed thanks to this jolt to his memory. Dalton, in a state of despair, is transported by Josh’s possession via The Further to the time when he attacked them in the basement. When Josh’s younger self tries to kill him, he rushes in and knocks him out, sending him back to the den of the red-faced demons.

When Josh investigates his father’s past, he learns that his father committed himself while a patient at a mental institution. He has a conversation with Renai, and she tells him the truth about what occurred to their family ten years ago and how his father could astral project as well but wrote off his experiences as the product of mental illness. When Foster pulls out his phone to show them a picture of the painting Dalton texted him, they immediately recognize he is in danger. Renai aids Josh in returning to The Beyond in search of their son.

After possessing Dalton and attempting to kill Chris, the demon is thwarted when Josh returns to his lair and frees Dalton. After the demon follows them through the red door, Josh stays behind to keep it closed, protecting Dalton until he can return to his body and seal the true door to The Beyond with black paint.

After a long time apart from the living world, Josh is reunited with his father’s spirit. Once Josh returns, he suggests a possible reconciliation by agreeing to spend supper with Renai and the kids. On his way out, he has an unexpected encounter with Elise’s ghost, who assures him of a prosperous future. The two are able to make amends when Dalton gives Josh a painting depicting him carrying a young Dalton out of The Beyond, and Josh drives to Dalton’s university to deliver it.
