Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Story
Adam, a Sovereign warrior created by their high priestess Ayesha, attacks the Guardians of the Galaxy at their new headquarters on Knowhere. Adam blames the Guardians for stealing from Ayesha and wants to destroy them. Adam stabs Rocket, seriously injuring him, but then runs away after being stabbed by Nebula. Rocket was built by a crazy scientist who ran a firm called Orgocorp; the Guardians can’t treat his wounds because of a kill switch the company implanted in him. In order to save Rocket, the Guardians must travel to Orgocorp’s main building in search of the switch’s override code.
While Rocket sleeps, he thinks back on his life. The High Evolutionary, in his quest to improve and humanize animal lifeforms in order to build a perfect civilization dubbed Counter-Earth, experimented on him while he was a newborn raccoon. Rocket became friends with the other animals in Batch 89, including Lylla the otter, Teefs the walrus, and Floor the rabbit. Rocket’s intelligence thrilled the High Evolutionary at first, but once it surpassed his own, he got infuriated. The High Evolutionary intended to eliminate the outmoded Batch 89 after using Rocket to develop his Animen creations. He also intended to harvest Rocket’s brain for further study. Rocket saved his pals, but Lylla perished at the hands of the High Evolutionary. Angry, Rocket mauled the High Evolutionary, but the High Evolutionary’s minions shot and murdered Teefs and Floor before Rocket escaped Counter-Earth in a spaceship.
The Ravagers, led by a clone of Gamora,[c] currently assist the Guardians in infiltrating Orgocorp. Theel, one of the High Evolutionary’s advisors, is suspected of erasing the code from Rocket’s file, which they later recover. Gamora and the other Guardians travel to Counter-Earth to look for him. After the High Evolutionary, the race’s creator, threatened to destroy the Sovereign if they didn’t return Rocket, they were joined by Ayesha and Adam. Upon on Counter-Earth, the Guardians are taken to the Arête Labs by their guides. While Peter Quill, Groot, and Nebula head to Arête, Drax and Mantis stay behind with Gamora and Rocket. Drax gets Mantis into following Quill and his company into Arête, while guards make Nebula wait outside. Rocket was about to be captured by Adam and the High Evolutionary’s guard War Pig when Gamora came to the rescue.
In response to Quill’s probing, the High Evolutionary reveals his disappointment with Animen culture. He wipes out the Animen and Ayesha by obliterating Counter-Earth. Nebula, Drax, and Mantis board Arête as if it were a starship on their way to rescue Quill and Groot, but the two end up escaping Arête with Theel and stealing the code from his dead body before being picked up by Gamora. As Quill’s team cracks the code, Rocket collapses and experiences a near-death experience in which he sees Lylla, Teefs, and Floor again. As Quill enters the code to disable the kill switch and restart Rocket’s heart, Lylla assures him that his time has not yet arrived.
On Arête, Drax, Nebula, and Mantis are ambushed by a group of these genetically enhanced humanoid children. The remaining Guardians launch a rescue operation, triggering a clash with the High Evolutionary’s army. Kraglin saves the residents of Knowhere from an attack and then destroys Arête with his fire from Knowhere. The High Evolutionary’s crew mutinies because they want to flee, but he eliminates them. Defeating and befriending three giant Abilisks allowed Drax, Nebula, and Mantis to escape and rejoin Quill’s squad. Delaying their departure from Arête, the Guardians decide to save the kids instead, and they use Cosmo’s telekinetic tunnel to get to Knowhere. After learning that animals had been imprisoned on the ship, Rocket is attacked by the High Evolutionary; luckily, the other Guardians arrive in time to assist subdue him, and Rocket decides to spare him. The animals are saved by the Guardians and taken to Knowhere. Adam, who had previously rejected Quill, changes his mind after seeing how Groot rescued Quill from Arête.
As a result, after appointing Rocket as captain of the Guardians, Quill decides to leave the team and return to Earth to be with his grandfather, Jason. While Gamora rejoins the Ravagers and Nebula and Drax stay on Knowhere to nurture the rescued kids, Mantis travels with the Abilisks to find herself.
As the credits roll, we see a new team of Guardians form, including Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam, Phyla (one of the rescued kids), and Blurp (Adam’s pet).
